The Beginning In November 2007 at a Starbucks near Dallas, three classmates met over a laptop computer, looked at a web site prototype, and discussed what a web site might do for the CHS Class of 1959's 50th Reunion plans. By January 2008, the web site had evolved to the point that reunion committee members sent emails to classmates having email addresses to announce the site. Since that time, the web site has slowly evolved. Privacy At that first Starbucks meeting, it was decided to maintain some level of privacy for classmates. As such, only the first names and two letters of the last name are given in the directory. However, full names are listed in the Missing and Deceased pages - this has been done in hopes that this will assist in locating our missing classmates and maybe learn a bit more about our deceased classmates. The yearbook pages and the graduation program page do list complete names of classmates. The yearbook names and the graduate names are in jpg's. That is, they are graphic files (i.e. photo files) which are invisible to the "bots" that roam the Internet searching for information. The CHS Class of 1959 web site is built using a html (this is the language of the net - get a book if you want to know what it is) term called frames. Html frames can be likened to a compounded flow chart - that is, they bury themselves within themselves (yup, you got to get that book to figure that out). Most "bots" are not programmed to search through a family of frames - they stop at the parent page (i.e. the "index" page of the web site). So, the entire CHS1959 site might be like a private book to some "bots." Now, even with frames, there may be those "bots" that get in and we might want to stop it from seeing the biographical information about classmates. So, those "bio" pages are protected by an ID and a Password that is unique to each classmate. Also, we may have removed some information in a bio that a classmate submitted simply because it may be too informative about a classmate, the classmate's children or grandchildren or great grandchildren. Technical Stuff The following represents stuff that no classmate would ever want to know. It is listed here just to see if anybody reads this kind of stuff. It is very boring and we expect to hear your head hit your keyboard or monitor when you fall asleep reading it. Have fun and enjoy!!! The site has been tested on the following systems and browsers: Potential Problems Right Side of Menu Bar Does not Work: When using Internet Explorer, there is a condition in which you may not be able to click on the News and Happenings links at the right side of the menu bar at the top of this web page. Each time this has been reported, it has been found to be a problem related to how the user has been using the favorites display and/or the favorites panel at the left side of the web page display window. There is an apparent error in Internet Explorer that occurs when it is trying to display both the favorites list and a web page at the same time causing the web page to wrap instead of having a horizontal scroll. Users have found that by closing the favorites side panel or repeatedly opening and closing the panel causes the problem to go away. This problem happens with all web sites with any menu item links at the far right of the page. Clearing Cache: We have learned that some Internet browsers do not recognize commands to load an updated web page from the Internet. Instead, they load a web page from the browser's cache memory which is an "old" page. This would happen with any web site - it is not unique to the CHS 1959 site. Thus, a classmate may not see, in a timely manner, added bios and other items added to the web site. The Apple Safari Browser is an example of such a situation. You can resolve this prior to each session of surfing the Internet by clearing your cache (consult your help function on your browser). For the particular case of the Safari Browser, there is a series of steps using terminal commands for a fix or you can install one of the two or three free patch plug-in-programs to control cache clear automatically (these fixes can be found by Google search). Music on The Site R.L. Turner High School retained the Fight Song and Alma Mater as used by Carrollton High School when CHS was closed in 1962. There was some word changes made to the Alma Mater but the music remained the same. They were recorded by the R.L. Turner Band and were provide to the CHS 1959 Reunion Committee by David Zahrndt, Director of Bands, R.L. Turner High School. They have been converted to mp3 audio files for the web site. They play in a tandem, Fight Song followed by Alma Mater, that is repeated three times upon access to the "carrolltonhigh1959.com" web site. On a Windows computer, the Microsoft Media Player plugin to Internet Explorer or Firefox plays the music. On a MacIntosh computer, a Microsoft Media Player for Apple must be installed to be able to play the music. On a Linux Ubuntu computer using Firefox 2 or 3, the music plays with default plugins. |
